Strauss Mansion In Atlantic Highlands Receives Restoration Grant

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ — The Strauss Mansion in Atlantic Highlands received two grants from Monmouth County this March, and part of the money will go towards refurbishing the historic local property.

The Atlantic Highlands Historical Society was given a $4,878 preservation grant from the county and a $2,000 history grant. The $4,878 will go towards repairing the exterior transoms of the Strauss Mansion, and a kitchen door restoration.

The $2,000 will go towards helping the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society pay the utilities and insurance to keep the property open.

The Strauss Mansion is a classic Victorian-era property has stunning views of Sandy Hook Bay. The 21-room home was built as a "summer cottage" for a wealthy New York City businessman and his wife; it was built in 1893, the height of the Gilded Age. Located only a few miles away from New York City, Atlantic Highlands was home to many lavish summertime, bay-front estates at the time. The Strauss Mansion is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.

"These historic structures represent where our ancestors lived and worked and how Monmouth County came to be the place it is today,” said Monmouth County Freeholder Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the County Historical Commission. “I truly believe in historic preservation and know that one of the best ways to understand our County’s rich history is through the preservation and safeguarding of historic structures.”
