MILLBURN, NJ — After spending the first month of school undertaking remote education, Millburn students in fourth grade and younger returned to on-site education Monday. Now, the district is preparing for the fifth grade, middle school, and high school students to return to classrooms Nov. 9, but with differences in scheduling than originally anticipated.

Superintendent of Schools Christine Burton submitted a modified schedule for on-site learning at the Board of Education meeting Monday night. Among the changes, instead of on-site middle school and high school students using an A/B model in which they'd head into the buildings on alternate days, they will now be on an A/B/C model in which they attend for a four-day week, then spend the next two weeks remote.

These models only apply to students whose families chose for them to return to the buildings (any student has the option to remain on full-time remote learning).

This schedule will run through at least the end of the year.

Burton said that the district's older buildings with smaller classrooms make it difficult to social distance. She also said that the two weeks off will make quarantining easier if a student tests positive for coronavirus.

Fifth grade

At the Washington School, fifth graders will have AM and PM cohorts like the younger grades. Burton advised that on-site students may be taught by substitutes, as many teachers told the board this summer that they had medical reasons or family reasons they could not teach in person when school reopened. They will instead teach remotely.
