We investigate a selection of twentieth-century American short and longer stories by authors including Edith Wharton,Willa Cather, Philip Roth, and J.D. Salinger. We read Wharton’s, “The Other Two” and “Roman Fever”; Cather’s, “Paul’s Case” and “A Wagner Matinee”; Roth’s, “Eli the Fanatic”; and Salinger’s “For Esme’—With Love and Squalor.” Classes stress critical analysis of the course’s stories and focus on your insights, questions, and dialogue.
