Update: Millburn Affordable Housing Hearing Moved To December

MILLBURN, NJ — The latest court hearing about affordable housing in Millburn — postponed last month — has been postponed again from this week. Instead, the hearing will take place Dec. 16, 2022 at 10 a.m.

Each New Jersey town must provide a certain amount of affordable housing for its residents, a mandate that goes back to a 1980s New Jersey court case involving the town of Mount Laurel.

A year ago, the Millburn Township Committee approved a settlement with the Fair Share Housing Corporation, a non-profit activist group, to meet their affordable housing obligations by the end of 2025. But the plan has proved controversial, especially a proposed all-affordable housing development at 9 Main St.

Residents started a petition this year, saying the development will be too dense, and that it would be better for all residents if it had a mix of incomes. The petition has amassed more than 2,000 signatures.

Residents have been writing letters to the judge in the case, saying more resident input is needed into the plan.
