MILLBURN, NJ — The town of Millburn has now lost three residents to coronavirus, according to the most recent information shared by Essex County on Friday morning.

Last Friday, Millburn Mayor Jackie Lieberberg said in a letter, "It is with great sadness that I inform you all of the Township’s first COVID-19 related death. A resident in their 80s. Please keep this individual’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. Although this news is sobering, we should use it to strengthen our resolve to continue doing the right thing as a community and avoid further loss of our residents."

Essex County as a whole reported 351 deaths as of Friday morning, and there were 1700 statewide. In Essex, 4,560 people have been confirmed to have the virus, and 4,397 got a negative test result.

The numbers are from the state's Communicable Disease Reporting and Surveillance System, which tracks communicable diseases. The numbers may be entered into the state database before they are released by local officials.

The U.S. surgeon general said Sunday that the next weeks could be the "hardest and saddest" the country has seen.

On Thursday, Millburn Superintendent of Schools Dr. Christine Burton provided an update on Thursday about the district's remote learning plans, and noted that schools won't reopen until at least May 9.

Gov. Murphy also cast student graduation ceremonies in doubt in his daily address on Wednesday.

The state of New Jersey had a total of 1,700 deaths due to coronavirus as of Thursday morning, 198 of those since the day before. Gov. Phil Murphy held another press conference that morning to address the crisis. Read more here.

As of Tuesday evening, more than 88,000 people had died from the virus worldwide, 14,695 of those in the U.S.

Experts say that the novel coronavirus, because it's new, is more lethal and much harder to treat than the flu.

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that include the common cold as well as much more serious diseases. The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the U.S. was on Jan. 21.
