Township Flu Clinic Is Today

If you get the seasonal flu vaccine this year, it will include protection from H1N1, commonly known as swine flu.

The Millburn Health Department holds its annual flu clinic Wednesday at 1-3 p.m. at the Bauer Center in Taylor Park. The vaccine costs $20 except for those 65 years old or older with a Medicare card, who can get it for free.

Lou Anello, Millburn health director, said unlike a year ago the vaccine covers the H1N1 this year. A year ago a separate vaccine was necessary and separate flu clinics were held, including for Millburn School District children.

Plus the Center for Disease Control has broadened the restrictions for the vaccine, he said. Previously the target groups had been those who were older, with an illness or caretakers with senior citizens being the prime group. Now the flu shot is recommended for everyone, Anello said. The "what you need to know" sheet about the flu provided by the department states everyone six months old or older should get the flu vaccine.

But Tuesday's flu clinic is not for children. Those attending much be at least 18 years old, Anello said. Parents can bring their children to their regular pediatrician for the flu shot.

There's also sufficient vaccine this year, Anello said, which is why the health department is able to hold the clinic earlier than normal.

Anello said it's unclear how severe the flu will be this winter until cases are reported. But much of the madness over the flu the last year has been driven by media coverage. He cited the madness over H1N1 a year ago as an example.
