Wyoming Residents to Receive Free Jitney Passes

Residents in the Wyoming section of town will soon be receiving two passes to ride the Maplewood jitney to the train station.

Officials said during Tuesday's Township Committee meeting they've planned a mailing to alert residents about the service and to offer the passes. They said it was part of their agreement with Maplewood officials to continue to offer the service to Wyoming section residents.

Daniel Baer, a committee member, said the deal was for Millburn officials to pay $1,000 toward Maplewood's service. The committee agreed to the payment in June. But the other part of the agreement was to send information to Wyoming residents about the service, he said, which is happening now.

Baer said the two passes are to entice Wyoming residents to "leave their cars at home." It's a tremendous opportunity for residents to be sustainable and green and reduce their carbon footprint, he said.

Mayor Thomas McDermott, who sat with Baer in the negotiations to keep the jitney last spring, said the campaign is an important step to make people aware of the jitney service.

Last spring, Maplewood officials said they planned to discontinue the jitney service to the train station for Millburn residents in the Wyoming section. But after Wyoming residents raised the issue to the Township Committee, they negotiated the deal to continue the service.
