‘Bartok To Beatles’ Concert At Shomrei Emunah In Montclair

Shomrei Emunah will host a concert contrasting the harmonies of Bartók with the melodies of The Beatles and other pop artists.

Congregation Shomrei Emunah will present a concert contrasting the intricate harmonies of Bartók with the timeless melodies of The Beatles and other pop artists on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 4 p.m. at Shomrei Emunah, 67 Park Street in Montclair.

Titled “Contrasts,” four remarkable, world class performers – Mark Dover, Clarinet; Kara Dugan, Vocalist; Peter Dugan, Piano and Doori Na, Violin, will take the audience on a journey of musical diversity and creativity including portions of Bartók’s Contrasts, a composition based on Hungarian and Romanian dance melodies for clarinet, violin and piano. The concert is sponsored by the Eric Singer Charitable Fund.

Tickets are $20 for adults in advance and $25 at the door. Admission is free for college students with ID and children under 18. Tickets can be purchased in advance at shomrei.org/concert.

Mark Dover is a Grammy Award-winning clarinetist and since 2016 has served as the clarinetist of Imani Winds, and has appeared as a soloist with the Atlanta, Baltimore, and Albany Symphonies, and the American Composers Orchestra. Most recently, Dover was awarded a Grammy (2024) as a player and producer for “Best Classical Compendium” for Imani Wind’s latest release, “Passion for Bach and Coltrane.” His debut album with Imani Winds, “Bruits,” was nominated for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance at the 2022 Grammy Awards. He received his Master of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music and his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan.

Kara Dugan is a mezzo-soprano whose diverse career ranges from baroque oratorio to world premieres. Recent seasons include recitals at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, New York Festival of Song, New York City’s Century Club, Festival Napa Valley, and the White Mountains Music Festival with members of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. This summer season she sang at the Metropolitan Opera House in a seven-show run of American Ballet Theater's production of Christopher Wheeldon and Joby Tablot's “Like Water for Chocolate.” As a passionate recitalist, she often performs with her husband Peter Dugan, pianist and host of NPR’s From the Top. The husband and wife duo were recently featured on PBS Great Performances’ “Now Hear This” and have performed across the United States. Ms. Dugan received her Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees from The Juilliard School.

Peter Dugan’s debut performances with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony were described by the Los Angeles Times as “stunning” and by the SF Chronicle as “fearlessly athletic.” He is heard every week across America as the host of National Public Radio’s beloved program “From the Top.” Dugan has appeared as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician across North America and abroad. In 2020, he joined acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell for “At Home With Music,” a national PBS broadcast and live album release on Sony Classical. Recently he joined Bell for recitals at London's Wigmore Hall, Taipei’s National Theater and Concert Hall, and the Kennedy Center in D.C. Dugan is equally at home in classical, jazz, and pop idioms and has collaborated with artists ranging from Jesse Colin Young, to Renee Fleming, to Paquito D'Rivera. He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The Juilliard School, resides in Montclair and is a Yamaha Artist.

A dynamic and versatile musician, Doori Na is known for his deep commitment to chamber music, his leadership as concertmaster for orchestras, and his innovative work in contemporary music. He has collaborated with Itzhak Perlman, members of the Juilliard String Quartet, the New York Philharmonic, and many more. As a longtime member of both the Argento New Music Project and New Chamber Ballet, Doori has performed internationally, premiering numerous new works and showcasing his dedication to bringing contemporary music to life. His passion extends to reviving neglected works and composers, particularly those overlooked due to class and race. Na is featured on Chick Corea’s “The Continents” album and has toured Europe with Brad Mehldau and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, further demonstrating his versatility across genres.
