Essex County Man Rams Police Cars During MSU Chase

The chase began in Bloomfield and ended with a crash and struggle on the Montclair State University campus.

Bloomfield police have released more information about a car chase that ended with a crash on the Montclair State University campus on July 24.

According to the BPD, the chase began when police responded to a fight in progress in the area of Clubb Street and Mohr Avenue.

While the responding officer attempted to gain control of the scene, a red, four-door, 2003 BMW disregarded his attempts to stop and fled the area.

Bloomfield police located the fleeing vehicle on Broad Street and began their pursuit of the suspect, who led them through Brookdale Park into Montclair and onto the Montclair State University campus.

The suspect then fled through Montclair State’s Lot 3 behind Panzer Gym, coming out through Lots 7 and 8.

Along the way, the suspect vehicle intentionally struck two Bloomfield police cars in an attempt to escape, police reported.

The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Emanuel Cobar, of West Orange, was taken into custody on Carlisle Road and College Avenue after a brief struggle.

He was charged with aggravated assault with a weapon (his vehicle), aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding, DWI, underage DWI, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, unsafe operation of a motor vehicle, wrong way on a one way street, open container of alcohol in a vehicle, failure to stop for an emergency vehicle and careless driving.

His bail was set at $50,000 with a 10 percent cash option.
