Montclair School Budget Approved Two Days Ahead of State Deadline

Some teaching and staff positions saved from chopping block; 4.15 percent tax levy for local property owners.

During a Monday public hearing, the Montclair Board of School Estimate (BSE) unanimously approved a $105.7 million budget for the upcoming school year.

The 2015-16 budget will include a 4.15 percent tax levy for local property owners, as proposed during previous public hearings.

The budget went before the BSE for final approval after being passed by the Montclair Board of Education in March, with a final deadline of April 8 to be submitted to the Essex County Superintendent of Schools.

According to a report, eight teacher and 17 paraprofessional jobs – which were potentially on the chopping block due to a multi-million dollar budget deficit – were restored to the budget.

District administrators had previously proposed the elimination of 23 paraprofessionals, 10 teachers, four Central Office positions, one school secretary, and one nursing aide.
