The appointment of female and African-American deputy chiefs are notable; the department has seen allegations of racial imbalance among its supervisors in recent years.
In January of 2014, Sabagh told The Montclair Times that 32 of the department’s 106 staff members were racial minorities, and that 12 of the 106 are female.
Of 31 supervisors, six were minorities and two were female.
