More Early Dismissals For Montclair Schools As Heat Wave Lingers

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair public school students will be dismissed early on Thursday and Friday as a heat wave drags on.

As of Wednesday morning, there were 15 New Jersey counties under a heat advisory. Temperatures near 100 are expected in Passaic, Hudson, Bergen, Essex and Union counties through Thursday evening, forecasters said.

Montclair school administrators called for an early dismissal on Wednesday, the first day of the new school year. Now it’s déjà vu all over again, as late Montclair resident Yogi Berra might have said.

According to the Montclair Public School District:

“Due to excessively high heat indexes predicted to continue through the week, all schools will follow abbreviated-day schedules on Thursday and Friday, September 7 and 8. The YMCA will continue to offer Before Care and will offer After Care until 3:30 pm to children already registered. We recognize that early dismissal creates inconveniences for many in our community and thank you for supporting our efforts to keep students safe during these days of extreme heat.”

COOLING CENTERS

Due to the excessive heat forecast, the following facilities in Montclair opened as cooling centers on Wednesday, and will remain open through Friday at their regular hours:

• The Township Municipal Building, 205 Claremont Avenue, will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
• The Montclair Public Library main branch, 50 South Fullerton Avenue, will be open during the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday; and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
• The Montclair Public Library Bellevue Avenue branch, 185 Bellevue Avenue, will be open Wednesday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Friday 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.
