But before you leap to conclusions about the testing results, consider the following statement from Montclair Interim Superintendent Ronald Bolandi, sent to parents via a letter in December:

“Montclair Public Schools had a high opt out rate for PARCC testing and the Montclair test scores as presented and compared to other districts and the State are not valid. We will not be making a formal report on the status of PARCC as it relates to the district’s performance. We also will not be using the scores for placement in any academic programs.”

HOW TO INTERPRET THE RESULTS

According to the New Jersey Department of Education:

“[The PARCC exams] were designed to replace the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJ ASK) and the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) and match the content and skills outlined in the new standards that are guiding instruction,” the NJDOE stated in a form letter to parents.

“These new tests moved away from fill-in-the bubble tests and asked questions that require students to explain their answers. The results from PARCC, along with your child’s overall educational learning experience, including performance in the classroom, provide an overall picture of his or her academic success and progress towards graduating high school ready to succeed at college level work.”
