School of Rock Montclair to Offer "Rookies" Program for Young Rockers Ages 5 to 7

School of Rock Montclair will debut the first session of their “Rookies” music education program on Saturday, February 14. The one hour weekly class will take place from 11am to noon, and will introduce kids to learning and playing music in a fun, structured setting.

“The goal of ‘Rookies’ is to give younger kids a chance to play cool rock n’ roll hits, try out different musical instruments, and develop a love for music,” says School of Rock Montclair Creative Director Kevin March, who will be leading “Rookies” along with other School of Rock faculty. “Unlike other group music programs that require parents to participate, ‘Rookies’ is a kids-only activity. We’ll be working on rhythmic training, ear training, song structure, group performance, and playing lots of exciting music games.”

Kids who sign up for ‘Rookies’ don’t need to bring any instruments or have previous musical experience: they’ll be working with School of Rock Montclair’s equipment as they take turns exploring the guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and singing. Kids in the class will work together as a group as they try out the instruments and learn how they feel, work, and sound.

“Parents who think we’ll be teaching tunes like ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ and ‘Bingo’ will be pleasantly surprised by our planned repertoire,” says March. “Hits by Queen, AC/DC, Joan Jett, Train, One Republic, Echosmith, and many more will be on our set list, so moms, dads, and caregivers should get ready to load some awesome new jams onto their iPods to blast at home for their kids to sing along to.”

“Rookies” will be held weekly on Saturdays from 11am to noon beginning on February 14 at School of Rock Montclair, located at 125 Valley Road. Class size will be between eight and 12 kids.
