Yogi Berra Museum Plans ‘Celebration Of Life’ On Anniversary Of His Death

The legacy of the baseball Hall of Famer and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient will come alive again on Sept. 25.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra passed away. However, for those seeking to pay their respects, the life and legacy of the former catcher and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient will come alive again at the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center on Sunday, Sept. 25.

The museum will host a “Celebration of Life” that will include magicians, mascots, music, movies and a baseball clinic at adjoining Yogi Berra Stadium, all part of the commemoration of Yogi Berra’s passing at age 90 on Sept. 22, 2015.

According to a museum news release, each visitor will receive a souvenir and the event will also include contests and giveaways every hour. In addition, visitors can send messages on baseballs to troops overseas courtesy of Billy Cook, a 14-year-old from Washington Township whose BASEball project was inspired in part by Berra, a World War II veteran who participated in the D-Day invasion at Normandy.

To honor Berra’s exemplary baseball career, the Montclair State University baseball team will conduct a free sports clinic from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. (ages 6-12) at the adjacent minor-league stadium which was named after Berra, as is the street (Yogi Berra Drive) that runs through MSU’s campus. Jack the Jackal, mascot for the minor-league New Jersey Jackals, and Rocky the Red Hawk, MSU’s feathered mascot, will be at the event to greet visitors and take photos.
