In preparation for Read Across America, Woodmont Elementary School in Montville Township hosted the famous character, Amelia Bedelia. She was joined by Herman Parish, who has written over 30 books featuring the loveable and literal maid.
Parish is the nephew of Peggy Parish, the author who originally created Amelia Bedelia in 1963.
Herman Parish spoke to the students about figures of speech, and literalism. The author also spoke about his aunt’s life, her inspiration for writing Amelia Bedelia, and his own inspirations for Amelia Bedelia stories.

Parish explained that there are many ways to enjoy books. They can be borrowed from the library, purchased, or downloaded. He also said there are many ways to tell stories about a character. Since 1995 when Parish took over the writing of the Amelia Bedelia series, he said he has been influenced by the many ways one can enjoy a book and tell a story. The author has expanded the series to include Young Amelia Bedelia stories, Amelia Bedelia chapter books, and interactive books.
Peggy Parish was a teacher in New York City. Herman Parish told students that his aunt often said, “You should read what you like to read.”
