About Rugby
Find out what's happening in Montvillefor free with the latest updates from Patch.
Rugby is the second largest participation sport in the word behind soccer with over 3 million
participants worldwide, over 1.9 million spectators and a global TV audience of 4 billion at
the last Rugby World Cup, in France, 2007. In America there are over 2700 Rugby Clubs,
many with up to three 15-person teams. 800 colleges and over 700 high schools play rugby
in America.
Much of Rugby’s value comes from its rich history, traditions, camaraderie and community
involvement with the sport. The game was ‘invented’ in 1823 in England when William Webb
Ellis a young student of the Rugby School “with fine disregard for the rules of football
(soccer)” picked up the ball and ran with it. American Football emerged from rugby in the
1880’s.
According to a recent National Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association survey rugby is
currently the fastest growing sport in the USA.
What is American Flag Rugby?
American Flag Rugby (“AFR”), is a coed, non-contact version of rugby for
children entering grades K-9. Approximately 1,400 kids participate in AFR
programs throughout NJ and PA, with new programs in CT and two more coming on Long Island.
The play features the thrill and openness
of the Olympic game of rugby sevens, the fun of continuous, age appropriate
activity, and the re-assurance of the safe, coed, non-contact environment.
American Flag Rugby is great because all players get to run, catch, pass and
score, regardless of their position, gender, size, shape or ability. It
encourages teamwork and enhances athletic skills and fitness. As such, flag rugby is very
complementary to other sports; increasing generic athletic skills such as balance,
coordination, agility, visual awareness, handling, decision making and of course core fitness.
Who is Elite Rugby America?
Elite Rugby America (“ERA”) is an organization that runs year-round player and coaching
camps to develop players and coaches in the NE of America. We live, love and breath rugby.
Our camps employ a player centered coaching philosophy providing age appropriate coaching
for players of all ages and levels of experience. We prepare players to play to the best of
their potential using the best coaches available from the US and UK. We also offer local
communities expert support in setting up local clubs and programs in addition to providing
such clubs and programs with ongoing coach and player development opportunities
