Finding a Better Man’s Best Friend: The Pros of Adopting from an Animal Shelter

1.       Animals at shelters are more sociable.  Animals at a shelter get "socialized.” Part of a volunteer’s work at a shelter is to take the animals out of the cage and play with them for a certain amount of time.  At an animal shelter, you know you are getting a pet that is accustomed to human interaction. Often volunteers will even be able to tell you if the cat or dog you are inquiring about is good with children and/or other pets.

 2.       Animals at shelters will be at least semi-trained. Most shelter cats will come litter-trained and most shelter dogs will come somewhat “bathroom” trained. Of course your new pet will have to adjust to their new home and may deal with the stresses of being moved, but they will learn to use their new “bathroom” much quicker than a kitten or puppy would learning from the start.

 3.        Pay way less for your new best friend.  When you adopt a pet, you are actually saving a lot of money.  Adoption fees are typically far less than what breeders and pet stores charge. Animals placed in shelters are almost always spayed or neutered and vaccinated.  These preliminary, but necessary procedures add up in the end.
