Lenapehoking (Land of the Lenape) is
the subject of the next “Glimpses of the Past Series” at the Montville
Township Historical Society’s program, April 14 (Monday), 7:30 p.m. in the Montville Township Senior House,
356 Main, Montville.

Meta Janowitz, PhD, is an archaeologist specializing in the material

culture of the Dutch.  She has written
numerous articles, and trade reports and has co-edited the book “Tales
of Gotham, Historical Archaeology, Ethnohistory and Microhistory of New York
City”. 
She is active in numerous professional organizations and is on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts.  

The
Original People (Lenni-Lenape) inhabited New Jersey long before the Europeans
arrived.  They were a people with a
strong sense of tradition and close ties to the land on
which they lived.  They based
their living and culture on the environment of New Jersey.  They were known for their peaceful ways.  They were a people with a strong sense of tradition and. European
diseases and wars took their toll on NJ’s natives and by 1700 the population of
the Lenape was only one fourth of what it was when the Dutch arrived.  Many were forced to move west in the early 19th
century.  Nevertheless, there are still
Lenape in New Jersey.  Come hear
about New Jersey’s first families.
