MOUNT LAUREL, NJ — A 15-year-old freshman at Lenape High School died after he was hit by a car while walking down a road on Sunday, according to the Lenape Regional High School District.
"Our Lenape Family suffered a tragic loss today with the death of student Jude Gill, a well-respected and beloved member of our freshman class," Principal Tony Cattani said in a letter to the school community on Wednesday.
At around 8:30 p.m., officers responded to the 1400 block of Church Street for a report of a pedestrian-involved vehicle accident.
Gill was taken to Cooper Hospital after the crash.
According to Mount Laurel Police, the 29-year-old woman who was driving stayed at the scene and was cooperating with authorities.
Gill was "Very friendly. He made friends with everybody. He was just a good kid," his former coach and the President of Mt. Laurel Basketball, Chris Beeler, told NBC.
The 15-year-old was a member of the Mount Laurel Basketball program from kindergarten through 8th grade.
The group honored him on Wednesday in a social media post that called Gill "a teammate" and "a friend."
The tribute also pointed out how, "Coaches, teammates, and families will remember his energy, his love for the game, and the way he showed up for those around him."
A fundraiser has been organized for Gill's family to help with medical and funeral costs.
More than $90,000 has already been raised.
Counseling support from other schools in the district and Burlington County will be on hand this week to assist students and staff.
Anyone who would like to reach out about support can contact the Lenape Counseling Center at (609) 654-5111, followed by option 334400 or 336600.
