FLORENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ — A 3-year-old girl and her mother were in critical condition Friday after they were struck by a car while trick-or-treating on Halloween, police said.

The girl was trick-or-treating with her 33-year-old mother in their hometown of Florence, Burlington County, when both were struck by the car, police said.

The car was driven by a 44-year-old man who struck the mother and daughter on Cedar Lane, between Olive Street and Morris Court, just after 6:30 p.m. Thursday night, police said. They were both airlifted to a local hospital.

The driver remained on the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation, police said. He was not injured. Neither of the victims or the driver were identified by police.

The speed limit is 35 mph in the area, according to NBC 10. One witness told 6 ABC they came out of their home after hearing a lot of yelling. The driver sat in front of their house and was crying,"I didn't see them. I didn't see them."

New Jersey saw severe weather Thursday night, although police didn't specifically cite wet road conditions as a reason for the accident, which remains under investigation. See related: 27K Lose Power, Schools Close After Severe NJ Weather Slams State

An 11-year-old boy was also struck by a car on Halloween, in Maple Shade, according to police. He was hit while trick-or-treating with a group of children near Stiles Avenue and Broadway just before 7 p.m.

He was taken to Cooper University Hospital to be treated for internal injuries, police said. He remained hospitalized as of Friday afternoon.

The driver in that incident also remained on the scene and cooperated with police. No charges have been filed. Anyone with additional information on this accident is asked to call 856-234-8300 and refer to case number 2019-51773.

Both accidents come about a week after a pair of fatal hit-and-run crashes in Camden County.

A man was killed while crossing Route 38 in Cherry Hill just before 5 a.m. after a car ran a red light and kept going, police said. The victim has not been identified, and police are still searching for the driver. They are searching for a dark colored older model Nissan Maxima or Nissan Altima.

One day later, a 50-year-old Lindenwold woman was killed while crossing College Drive in Gloucester Township, police said. Patricia M. Mills was killed while crossing the street from Urgent Care to ShopRite to fill her prescription when she was hit.

According to a recent report from the Governors Highway Safety Association, New Jersey ranks 12th in the country for the most pedestrian deaths in the country. There were 73 pedestrian deaths in the first six months of 2018, a 9 percent increase from the same period the previous year.
