Local Trees Take Center Stage In Moorestown Arbor Day Contest
The contest brings attention to Moorestown's streets that are named after trees or incorporate trees into their name.

MOORESTOWN, NJ — Tree City USA is living up to its name with a contest for children. The Moorestown Improvement Association (MIA) is hosting a contest for young people in connection with Arbor Day, which is Friday, April 27. The contest brings attention to Moorestown’s streets that are named after trees or incorporate trees into their name. Some are major roads crossing through Moorestown, while others are just a block or two in length or little cul-de-sacs.
The first part of MIA’s contest asks students to identify as many of these streets in Moorestown as possible. For example, “Redwood Avenue” or “Sequoia Court,” which MIA points out are not really streets in Moorestown. Student contestants can use any resources available to develop their lists.
The second part of the contest is to try to locate and actually photograph trees on streets that bear those trees’ name. Another fake example is a giant redwood tree on Redwood Avenue.

“This will not be possible for all streets named after trees, but student contestants should see how many they can locate and photograph,” MIA said in a release announcing the contest. “Be sure to include yourself in the photo alongside each tree you find.”
Champions and honorable mention runners-up will be selected within different age-level categories, by age. Winning entries will be based on the number of streets correctly identified and numbers of accurate photos submitted. Prizes will include a variety of fun items from local Moorestown businesses, and all students chosen for awards will get special recognition at the Arbor Day festivities in Moorestown. All decisions of MIA contest judges will be final.

Any student who is a resident of Moorestown is eligible to participate. Contest entry forms are available at the Moorestown Hardware Store, 300 Mill Street, and can be downloaded from MIA’s website: www.moorestownimprovement.org. Entry forms include specific instructions on how they can be submitted by mail, email, or in person. The deadline for submitting entries is Friday, April 6.
Since 1904, MIA has been working to improve the quality of life in Moorestown. One of its initiatives, begun in 1907 and still continuing, has been to support the planting of shade trees in town. Moorestown’s majestic trees are one of the town’s most valuable resources; they particularly enhance the beauty and character of the community.
