Obituary: Robert Becker

Robert Becker died on Nov. 3 at his home.

Robert G. Becker, 86, a retired sales and marketing executive, died on November 3 at home.

A resident of 35 years of Moorestown, and most recently of Medford Leas, Medford, NJ, he was born in Newark, NJ, and raised in north Jersey.

He graduated from Columbia H.S., South Orange, NJ, and Lafayette College in 1951, where he played lacrosse and received a degree in Geology and an Army ROTC Infantry commission.

During the Korean War he was platoon leader serving in the 45th Infantry Division, 179th Regiment on Heartbreak Ridge.

He began his business career in the fork lift truck industry in Cleveland with Baker Raulang Co., then moved to Yale & Towne Mfg. in Washington, DC.

He then worked at their headquarters in Philadelphia, PA for 37 years, except for 4 years spent managing their NY retail operation.

He retired from the successor company, Yale Materials Handling Corp. in 1995.

An avid lacrosse player and fan, he played for the Cleveland, Washington, D.C., and NJ Lacrosse Clubs. He later coached the South Jersey Lacrosse Club and went on to help with the Moorestown Lacrosse Club. He was a member of the Y’s Men’s International Club, YMCA Board of Directors of Burlington County, NJSPA, Encore, Dancing Class, and First Presbyterian Church of Moorestown as well as a Patron of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He and his wife Susan travelled extensively, visiting 59 countries and all seven continents.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife of almost 50 years, “Suz,” Susan Sloan, he is survived by son Robert G. Becker, Jr. (Karen) of Brick, NJ, daughter Elizabeth Timm Brandhorst (Eric) of Carlisle, MA, and four granddaughters, Emma and Claire Brandhorst, and Kate and Lauren Becker.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, 101 Bridgeboro

Road, Moorestown, NJ. 08057. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to YMCA Camp Abnaki, Greater Burlington YMCA, 266 College St., Burlington, VT 05401, or First Presbyterian Church of Moorestown,.
