RV Social Worker named Educational Services Professional of the Year
The Rancocas Valley Regional High School District (RVRHS) recognized Child Study Team social worker, Joseph Brogan
Mount Holly, N.J. – The Rancocas Valley Regional High School District (RVRHS) announced Child Study Team social worker, Joseph Brogan, as its 2023-24 Governor’s Educational Services Professional of the Year.
Brogan has worked as a school social worker for the past 25 years, 20 of which he has spent at RVRHS. He said he enjoys working in such a collaborative environment to best support students, noting New Jersey Child Study Teams include social workers such as himself in addition to a school psychologist and a learning consultant.
“We tap into everyone’s expertise, which makes for a better approach to benefit our students,” said Brogan.

He also added that the RVRHS culture influences his job performance, as well as his overall job satisfaction. “This is a great school, very genuine and authentic. You can be who you are, which positively impacts interactions with both colleagues and students.”
Brogan works primarily with special education students as they navigate academic, social, emotional or behavioral challenges. “There’s a level of support I can provide during the day, and if students didn’t receive that support, they may be at greater risk for other challenges and difficulties down the road,” Brogan said.

Those who nominated Brogan for Educational Services Professional of the Year noted his “very unique way of building rapport with every student.” An administrator wrote how Brogan “engages students on a personal and professional level, being both understanding and caring, while at the same time placing responsibility on the student to pull themselves up with his support.”
Director of Special Services Kelly Scapellato added, “In a time when everything is email or virtual meetings, Mr. Brogan goes out of his way of having meaningful interactions with students and parents.”
Brogan grew up in Marlton and attended Rowan College at Burlington County after high school before transferring to Rutgers University-Camden to earn his bachelor’s degree. He then earned a Master of Social Work degree from Rutgers University – New Brunswick.
He is a resident of Delran, where he lives with his wife, Carla, and has two sons in college, Sam and Jake.
