Directed by Carol Reed. With James Mason, Robert Newton, Cyril Cusack, F.J. McCormick. Suspense and politics mix in this intense saga of an escaped convict and member of an IRA-like organization who ventures outside after months of hiding only to get involved in a crime that leads him to ponder his life. Meanwhile, a rabid manhunt for him ensues on the dark streets of Belfast. A tune-up for Reed’s “The Thin Man,” released two years later and in many respects, just as impressive.
October 5: The Big Combo

U.S., 1955, 88 minutes
Directed by Joseph H. Lewis. With Cornel Wilde, Jean Wallace, Richard Conte, Lee Van Cleef. A gritty crime drama with strikingly moody cinematography and uncompromising characters centers on a determined police detective out to nab a ruthless crime kingpin at any cost. Helmed by low budget maestro Lewis (“Gun Crazy”), this unforgettable film noir offers raw force and in-your-face surprises galore.
November 2: The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming
U.S., 1966, color, 124 minutes
Directed by Norman Jewison. With Alan Arkin, Eva Marie Saint, Carl Reiner, Brian Keith. A Russian submarine accidentally is beached on a quiet Massachusetts island, causing all sorts of havoc for its oddball residents. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, this sharply observed satire of Cold War relations showcases the cinematic debut of Arkin, who was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as the Soviet sub skipper.
December 7: What’s Up, Doc?
U.S., 1972, Technicolor, 94 minutes
Directed by Peter Bogdanovich. With Barbara Streisand, Ryan O’Neal, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars. A zany salute to the frantic farces of the 1930s and 1940s, it takes such disparate elements as a milquetoast musicologist, a quartet of plaid suitcases, secret documents, a demanding fiance, igneous rocks, stolen jewels, the city of San Francisco, and a daffy dame and spins them into comedy gold.
