The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has identified the plane as a Hawker Beechcraft 58 Baron aircraft (pictured below). A spokesperson for the NTSB didn't have specific information about the flight, but 6 ABC reports the plane appears to have departed from South Jersey Regional Airport in Lumberton, 10 miles southwest of the crash scene. The plane was based at the airport, and the pilot was known to those who work there, according to the 6 ABC report.

The NTSB was sending an investigator to the scene early Wednesday afternoon.

A Beechcraft plane departed from South Regional Airport just after 9 a.m., and was due to arrive at Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis, Massachusetts at 10:36 a.m., according to a FlightAware.com, a website that tracks plane flights. However, the activity log for the flight shows it went off the radar shortly after takeoff. It is unknown if this is the same craft involved in Wednesday morning's accident.

The Springfield Township Police Department has confirmed that it has officers on the scene, but could provide no further information Wednesday morning. A spokesperson from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) wasn't immediately available for comment.

Smithville Jacksonville Road will remain closed throughout the night, according to NBC 10.

A firefighter told nj.com the plane traveled across two fields before landing in the woods.

Garrett Andrew Rodriguez-Maribona, 27, of Eastampton Township, told Patch he saw the crash, but wasn't initially sure what had happened. He was on his way home from work when he decided to take a road he usually doesn't use. When he came to around the bend for Smithville-Jacksonville Road, he saw a thick cloud of smoke.

He then saw an object fly across the road, and a series of lights. At first, he thought it was the result of an explosion and called 911. A man in a pickup truck pulled up behind him shortly after that and told Rodriguez-Maribona that he thought a plane had crashed.

"He said he had heard a humming sound and then a crash," Rodriguez-Maribona said. "Then I started looking at the pieces of the wreckage. I started seeing windows and a windshield. Then I looked over and saw a plane in the bushes."

He called 911 a second time and told them what had happened before going into what he called "search and rescue mode."

"If something like that had happened to me, I'd want someone to come looking for me," Rodriguez-Maribona said.

After a brief search, he said the man he was with found one of the bodies, and knew that person hadn't survived. He said he learned after he got home later that there were two fatalities.

"I just hope the family can find closure," he said.

Rodriguez-Maribona provided the video below.

The investigation is ongoing and police said more information would be provided later today. The cause of the accident wasn't immediately known, but skies were overcast and rain fell across the region early Wednesday morning. Rodriguez-Maribona said that at the time, there were a few drops of rain, but nothing heavy.

Patch will provide updates on this breaking news story as more information becomes available.
