Artists' Reception: Historic Morristown: Photographs by Judi Benvenuti and Pam Hasegawa

Morristown, NJ.
07.19.13.   Historic MorristownPhotographs by Judi Benvenuti and Pam
Hasegawa
enlarged on water color and metallic fine art papers and
archivally matted and framed, have been receiving glowing acknowledgement. They
are on view through the summer at Sandrian Camera Shop, 72 South St.

Benvenuti’s images portray
colonial Morristown, which, while never a battlefield, was occupied by militia
or regular troops for eight years.  These
images, along with numerous others, fill the pages of Morristown: The War Years 1775-1783, by author Mary Ann Cataldo and
photographer Benvenuti, published by Eastern National Park and Monument
Association.

Great care was taken with the accuracy of these photographic
scenes in order to portray, as authentically as possible, people's lives during
that period.  Many of these photographs were made at colonial
re-enactments over a two-year span, and the remaining photos, unobtainable at
encampments, were staged with emphasis on detail. All of the pictures
were taken with available light, which was often only candles,
lanterns, fires or the flash of muskets.  The quotations appear as they
were written - mistakes and all.

Hasegawa’s depictions of the historic landmarks that draw
tourists from North America and beyond have been taken in the course of
ordinary days and visits to the sites during the forty years she and her family
have lived in Morristown.  While primarily
a photographer of people and daily life in the U.S., Asia, the Indian
subcontinent and Africa, she finds loveliness in sites of interest framed by
the rhythms of nature’s seasons.

            Both artists have extensive exposure
through textbooks, UNICEF publications, and exhibits of their work, and are
happy to share their “here at home” images celebrating Morristown’s impressive
local history.  They will welcome
visitors at two receptions on Wednesday, July 24: Noon-2 p.m. and 5-7 p.m.  Store hours: MoTu,ThFr 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Wed. 9
a.m.-7 p.m. and Sat. 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
