Deep Freeze To Hit Morristown, Town To Open Warning Center

Forecasters predict an arctic air mass moving through the area starting Monday night. Here's the forecast.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — It's about to get cold in Morristown. An arctic air mass will move through the area, which forecasters expect to bring frigid temperatures through Tuesday night.

Expect bitter cold Monday night through Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service.

"While we're not talking about record cold, this will be the coldest air so far this season, and in a couple years for some locations," said the agency's Philadelphia/Mount Holly office, which serves the Morristown area.

Low temperatures Monday night could hit single digits to low teens, with wind-chill values at single digits or below zero. The weather could be dangerous for those without heat, and officials advised people to limit prolonged time outdoors.

Forecasters expect more bearable temperatures to return after Tuesday night, with a high of 34 predicted for Wednesday.

Morristown will open a warming center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on the third floor of Town Hall (200 South St.).

Here's the forecast for the Morristown area as of 3:30 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service:

  • Monday afternoon: A chance of flurries. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 29. West wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
  • Monday night: A chance of flurries before midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 11. Wind chill values as low as zero. West wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
  • Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 18. Wind chill values as low as zero. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
  • Tuesday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 13. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm.
  • Wedneday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 34. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
