I-287 Lane Closures Planned In Morris County: See Details

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — Drivers on Interstate 287 should prepare for overnight lane closures in both directions this weekend as work continues on the Hanover Avenue Bridge replacement project in Hanover and Morris Township.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) said two southbound lanes will close beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, June 26, until 9 a.m. Saturday, June 27, between mile markers 37.6 and 37.2. At least two travel lanes will remain open overnight.

Crews will restripe the roadway and install construction barriers to shift traffic toward the median, allowing for a long-term closure of the right shoulder beneath the Hanover Avenue Bridge.

By 9 a.m. Saturday, all southbound lanes are expected to reopen, with traffic shifted to the left. The right shoulder will remain closed through November 2027 while crews make bridge abutment repairs and complete other improvements.

A similar traffic pattern will be implemented on the northbound side the following night.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 27, until 9 a.m. Sunday, June 28, two northbound lanes between mile markers 37.2 and 37.6 will be closed overnight. As with the southbound work, at least two lanes will remain open.

By Sunday morning, all northbound lanes will reopen with traffic shifted toward the median, while the right shoulder remains closed through November 2027.

Motorists traveling through the area are urged to slow down, use caution and expect delays during the overnight work.

The lane shifts are part of a $17.5 million federally funded project to replace the concrete bridge deck on the Hanover Avenue (County Route 650) bridge over I-287. The project also includes drainage, lighting, signage, and fencing upgrades, along with new sidewalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps.

Construction is expected to be completed in Spring 2028.
