Morris Plains Police Cracking Down On Drunk Driving

As drunk driving rates increase during the holidays, MPPD are taking part in a statewide effort to keep drunk drivers off the roads.

MORRIS PLAINS, NJ — As the year winds down, Morris Plains Police are cracking down on drunk and intoxicated drivers as part of the annual "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" year end campaign.

Between Dec. 8 and Jan. 1, local and state police around New Jersey will conduct saturation patrols and sobriety check points to help get drunk drivers off the road.

Drunk driving tends to spike during the holiday season. Last year, 20 percent of all fatal traffic accidents involved drink drivers.

"During the last five years New Jersey has experienced near 40,000 alcohol involved crashes resulting in more than 750 fatalities, " Lt. Mike Koroski said. "This is a critical law enforcement program that can save lives during a time of the year when impaired driving traditionally increases by nearly 10 percent."

Koroski shared tips to avoid drunk driving and stay safe this December:

  • Take mass transit, a taxicab, or ask a sober friend to drive you home.
  • Spend the night where the activity or party is held.
  • If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement. Your actions may save someones life, and inaction could cost a life.
  • Always buckle-up, every ride. It's your best defense against an impaired driver.
  • If you are intoxicated and traveling on foot, the safest way to get home is to take a cab or have a sober friend or family member drive or escort you to your doorstep.
  • Be responsible. If someone you know is drinking, do not let the person get behind the wheel.
