MORRIS PLAINS, NJ — A small earthquake shook Morris Plains Monday night, the United States Geological Survey said.
The 1.7 magnitude earthquake hit the area around 6:35 p.m. Earthquakes that small typically aren't felt, but the shallowness (just five feet below the surface) made it perceptible to residents.
A number of residents called police and some reported a loud boom, but Morris Plains police told NJ.com there were no requests for service.

This is not the first time this year a small earthquake has hit the town. A 1.3 magnitude quake shook it in late March; no damage was reported then, either.
