1,000-Pound Piece Of ‘Military Ordinance’ Found In Newark Scrapyard: Police

Newark police have reported the discovery to officials at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, authorities say.

NEWARK, NJ — A 1,000-pound piece of “military ordinance” discovered in a Newark scrapyard on Thursday morning was deemed to be “safe” by local authorities.

Workers at Sims Metal Management on Richards Street and Raymond Boulevard discovered the ordinance around 7 a.m., the Newark Department of Public Safety stated. After conducting an investigation, the Emergency Services Unit of the Newark Police Division declared the device “safe” later that morning.

Newark police subsequently reported the discovery to officials at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, authorities said.

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose commended both the workers who reported the object and the Emergency Services Unit for its immediate response to ensuring that the ordinance was safe.

“In this season of uncertainty regarding found suspicious objects, an increased partnership of vigilance between the public and the police is vital,” Ambrose said.
