The ambulance was picking up a patient when it hit the girl while passing through an intersection, authorities say.

NEWARK, NJ — An ambulance hit a three-year-old girl and caused her life-threatening injuries in Newark’s south ward on Tuesday afternoon, authorities say.

The ambulance was heading to pick up a patient at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and didn’t have its light or siren activated when it hit the child at the intersection of Lyons Avenue and Hobson Street, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office stated.

The prosecutor's office did not name the ambulance company, and no charges have been filed, NJ.com reported.

The child is being treated at University Hospital in Newark, which told NJ.com that its ambulance was not the one that hit her.

An unnamed source told RLS Media that the child may have come detached from her guardian and entered the street prior to being struck.
