Newark Shooter Gunned Down Man In Wheelchair, Sentenced To Prison (patch.com) β Newark residents are learning that 36-year-old Shaheed Hall has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting 50-year-old Deshaun Winston, who was sitting in a wheelchair on Osborne Terrace in 2024. Prosecutors say video showed a prior argument between the men and later captured Hall returning to the Newark neighborhood to open fire, with additional prison time added for weapons and drug charges.

State Auditors Take Deep Dive Into Newark School Spending: Here's What They Found (patch.com) β Newark families are getting a close look at how their public school district has been spending hundreds of millions of dollars, after a state performance audit flagged issues with health benefits, enrollment counts, trips, and a stalled museum project. While auditors questioned several decisions and referred some matters to criminal justice officials, Newark school leaders stress that most spending was appropriate, the district remains high-performing, and its finances are considered strong.

Football: West Essex Beats Newark Central, 13-2 (TAPinto.net) β Newark Central's football team fell 13β2 at home Thursday night in a defensive battle against West Essex, despite grabbing a safety in the third quarter. Newark fans saw strong defensive moments, including an endβzone sack, but West Essex's rushing attack and a late interception return touchdown ultimately decided the game.

South Orange Daily Buzz: Oct. 8, 2026 (jerseybee.org) β Newark residents have several nearby outings coming up, including the "Dreamtime in Newark" art exhibit opening Oct. 15 at the Newark Museum of Art and a free pet costume parade at Branch Brook Park on Oct. 17. The roundup also highlights festivals, fundraisers, classes, and nature events in surrounding Essex County towns that are an easy trip from Newark.
