Bloods Gang Member Convicted in 2010 Murder
Joel 'Bandana' Hester faces life plus 30 years in prison for murder of Newark man

A Newark Bloods gang member known as "Bandana" has been convicted of a 2010 murder of a city man, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office announced.
Joel Hester, 25, was found guilty of first degree murder, as well as two weapons offenses, by an Essex County jury Thursday, which reached a verdict after about four hours of deliberation.
On June 14, 2010, Hester and Oscar Ayo Jr., 31, were arguing around 10:30 p.m. on Astor Street when Hester pulled out a gun and shot Ayo in the head. Ayo died some five hours later at a local hospital.

"This was a senseless murder," said Assistant Prosecutor Brian Matthews, who tried the case. "I trust that the guilty verdict offers the family of Oscar Ayo some sense of closure for their loss. I hope it also sends the message that disagreements cannot be solved with violence."
Prior to this case, Hester had been convicted of obstruction of justice, aggravated assault and eluding.
