Cops Arrest Wanted Alabama Man Near Newark Airport

The Alabama man was wanted for kidnapping and burglary charges, Port Authority police say.

Newark, NJ – A Port Authority police officer helped to apprehend a man wanted in Alabama for kidnapping and burglary charges, authorities say.

According to the Port Authority of NY/NJ, the officer saw James Sherman Rountree, 23, of Birmingham, Alabama, driving a 2011 Toyota near Newark Liberty International Airport around 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

The officer noticed that the Toyota – which had an Alabama license plate – was missing its rear bumper and rear view mirror, police stated.

After pulling Rountree over because of the alleged traffic violations, the officer found that he had arrest warrants out of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for kidnapping and burglary, authorities stated.

A Port Authority spokesman said that Rountree is accused of burglarizing and entering a vehicle while holding a victim at gunpoint on April 6.

After confirming the warrant and extradition with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Department, Port Authority police arrested Rountree and impounded his vehicle, then transported him to the Essex County Correctional Facility.
