New Jersey Murderer ‘Incapable Of Living In Civilized Society’: Prosecutor

"The best we can do at this point is lock him up," an Essex County prosecutor said about the convicted, 32-year-old New Jersey man.

NEWARK, NJ — An Essex County prosecutor had harsh words for a convicted murderer in Essex County during his sentencing hearing, arguing that the 32-year-old Newark man is “incapable of living in civilized society.”

On Monday, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office announced that a New Jersey Superior Court judge sentenced Sadot Council, 31, of Newark, to life in prison for fatally shooting fellow Newark resident Anthony Mayse, 32, after a fistfight in 2015.

Council had seven prior felony convictions as an adult at the time of the murder, including five prior convictions for acts of violence, Assistant Prosecutor Adam Wells said.

According to prosecutors, Council and Mayse got into a fistfight near a Stephen Crane Village home on April 28, 2015. After bystanders broke up the fight, Council rode away on a bicycle, got a gun, returned to the scene and fatally shot Mayse.

In addition to a first-degree murder conviction, Council was also found guilty of possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a handgun, prosecutors said.

“[Council] has demonstrated time and again that he is incapable of living in a civilized society,” Wells posited. “He is beyond rehabilitation. The best we can do at this point is lock him up for the rest of his life to keep the public safe.”
