Newark, NJ – If you’re planning on a homemade fireworks display in Newark this year, police have a word of advice: Don’t.

Public safety officials announced earlier this week that the Newark Police Division has initiated a crackdown on the use of possession of illegal fireworks for 2016.

The crackdown - which began on June 24 - resulted in the seizure of forty-seven pop-bottle rockets, eight roman candles and the issuance of three quality of life summonses so far, police stated on Monday.

On Wednesday, police announced that officers arrested a 35-year-old Newark man for allegedly selling fireworks from the trunk of his car on Vassar Avenue around 7 p.m.

According to police, the man had more than 6,300 fireworks, including "Bunker Bombs, hundreds of bottle rockets of varying sizes, Boomers, Festival Shells, Saturn Missiles and Roman candles."

“We will take the actions necessary to reduce the likelihood our residents being injured by fireworks which can explode and cause injury or death,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose stated. “As Fourth of July nears, we will continue our no tolerance enforcement posture and respond to tips or calls relative to their use or whereabouts.”
