Newark Is Among ‘Best Places For Halloween,’ 2023 Study Says

Love Halloween? New Jersey's largest city is a good place to enjoy the holiday, a new study says.

NEWARK, NJ — Do you love to celebrate Halloween? New Jersey’s largest city is a good place to enjoy the holiday, a new study says.

Financial information website WalletHub released a list of “2023’s Best Places for Halloween” on Tuesday, ranking 100 of the largest U.S. cities using factors such as the number of candy and chocolate stores each city has, Halloween party supplies stores per capita, and potential trick-or-treat stops.

Newark landed near the top of the list in the 17th slot. The top three cities were New York City, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. See the full list and learn about its methodology here.

Here are some of the factors that helped Newark rise to the top of the list:

  • 22nd – Percent of Potential Trick-or-Treaters
  • 8th – Walk Score
  • 20th – Crime Rate
  • 1st – Movie Theaters per Capita
  • 5th – Population Density

There are lots of benefits to having a Halloween-friendly city, WalletHub researchers say. One of them? A boost to the local economy.

“This year, the average U.S. household is expected to spend $108.24 on Halloween expenses, from decorations to treats to costumes,” the website states. “Collectively, that’s about $12.2 billion between the 73 percent of households that celebrate.”
