Newark Animal Control Officer Fatally Shot On Wainwright Avenue: Police

An animal control officer in Essex County was fatally shot on Wainwright Avenue, authorities say.

Newark, NJ – An animal control officer for the city of Newark was fatally shot on Tuesday night on Wainwright Avenue, authorities say.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the fatal shooting took place around 11:34 p.m. in the 200 block of Wainwright Avenue.

Authorities identified the victim as Alvis G. Carrington, 43, of Newark, an animal control officer for the city of Newark.

Carrington was pronounced dead at 12:12 a.m. on Wednesday.

An investigation is ongoing, authorities stated.

According to past web posts from the Associated Humane Societies, Carrington helped to investigate multiple instances of suspected animal cruelty in Newark over the last few years.

Carrington previously provided animal control services in Carteret, Kenilworth, Long Hill and Plainfield, according to the Associated Humane Societies’ 2013 Shelter/Pound Annual Report.
