Newark Child ‘Critical But Stable’ After Mom Stabbed Him: Prosecutors

A Newark woman faces several charges – including attempted murder – after she allegedly stabbed her 5-year-old son, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A Newark woman faces several charges, including attempted murder, after she allegedly stabbed her 5-year-old son earlier this week. Meanwhile, the youth remains hospitalized in “critical but stable condition,” authorities announced Tuesday evening.

Symona McGhee, 29, of Newark, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, according to a statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Department of Public Safety.

“On Monday, Nov. 6 at approximately 5 p.m., Newark police responded to a report of an injured child in a residence on the 100-block of Murray Street. Responding officers located the victim, a 5-year-old boy, who had been stabbed. He was transported to University Hospital and listed in critical but stable condition.”

In addition to the attempted murder charge, McGhee was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and endangering the welfare of a child.
