Newark Cop Car Kills Teen During Chase, SWAT Arrests Others

The six teens allegedly carjacked a Jaguar and are under investigation for three armed robberies.

A Newark police car struck and killed an 18-year-old male after he tried to bail out of the vehicle during a high-profile pursuit on Tuesday.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the incident began around 6:41 a.m., when a silver Jaguar was carjacked on Ivy Street in the Vailsburg section of Newark.

After a police chase, the six occupants of the vehicle bailed out near Hawthorne Avenue School and tried to flee the scene.

At that time, a police car struck and killed 18-year-old Tyree Crawford of Newark, the ECPO stated.

Three of the suspects were immediately apprehended, but two other juveniles fled into a home on West Runyon Avenue and barricaded themselves inside.

Newark police then sent a SWAT team to apprehend them.

NBC estimated that 115 officers responded to the scene, some armed with assault rifles and tactical gear.

The names of the five juveniles – four from Newark and one from Orange - are being withheld because of their ages, which range from 14 to 17.

Each has been charged with receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and possession of two handguns. In addition, one was charged with carjacking.

The same vehicle may have been involved in a series of other felonies, including two shooting robberies and an armed robbery, the ECPO stated.

A criminal investigation is ongoing.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Bureau is reviewing the pursuit. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, with assistance from the Newark Police Department, is investigating the felonies.
