NEWARK, NJ — The overall crime rate in New Jersey decreased by five percent from the previous year, according to recently released statistics from the NJ State Police. But what about local crime in Newark?
Last week, the New Jersey Department of Law & Public Safety released the 2015 Uniform Crime Report (UCR), which compiles offenses throughout the state from Jan. 1, 2015 to Dec. 31, 2015. The report tracks violent crimes such as murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, as well as burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.

This year marks the first time the UCR has used the revised and expanded definition of “rape” initiated by the FBI in 2013, which may have increased the number of reported rape offenses in each town from previous years, police stated.
