Newark Firefighters Rescue Senior Citizen From 12-Story Building

Firefighters located the elderly man in the hallway suffering from apparent smoke inhalation, Newark authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark firefighters rescued an elderly resident of a 12-story apartment building during a two-alarm blaze early Thursday morning, authorities say.

Newark firefighters responded to a fire at 301 Irvine Turner Boulevard around 12:44 a.m., which was elevated to a two-alarm situation 15 minutes after their arrival on scene. The fire was quickly elevated to a second alarm at 12:59 a.m., only 15 minutes after the arrival of the first firefighters.

While searching the building’s 9th floor, firefighters located the elderly man in the hallway suffering from apparent smoke inhalation, authorities said.

The first responders removed the senior citizen from the building and transported him to University Hospital by EMS for treatment.

The fire was declared under control at 1:16 a.m. with one firefighter sustaining a minor injury, authorities said.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Newark Fire Division and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Arson Squads.
