Newark High School Evacuated, ‘Gas Fumes’ Reported: Officials

Authorities evacuated a high school in Newark due to the reported "presence of gas fumes" in the building.

NEWARK, NJ — Authorities evacuated a high school in Newark on Wednesday due to the reported “presence of gas fumes” in the building. A Newark Fire Department Haz-Mat unit responded to the scene, officials said.

Weequahic High School at 279 Chancellor Avenue was evacuated around 11 a.m. when a NFD Haz-Mat crew responded to a call of “vapor fumes emanating from an unused classroom,” the Newark Department of Public Safety stated.

Haz-Mat members are investigating the source of the fumes, authorities said.
