Newark Inspectors Close 3 More Local Businesses, Find ‘Code Violations’

NEWARK, NJ — Newark city inspectors continue to crack down on local businesses who they allege are in violation of municipal code regulations, closing three stores on South Orange Avenue and issuing two other summonses last week.

According to Newark city officials, the latest enforcement actions are part of an ongoing effort from the local police, fire, code enforcement and health department that has resulted in dozens of summonses and tickets for the cited businesses over the past three weeks.

The latest round of inspections took place June 9 on South Orange Avenue between Sanford Avenue and Dover Streets and on Mount Vernon Place between Sanford Avenue and Eastern Parkway, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

Seven businesses on South Orange Avenue were found to have violations. Three were closed and two more were issued summonses, authorities said.

The following businesses were issues summonses and closed:

• 1 Creole Cuisine, 1084 South Orange Avenue
• JJKM Tax and Travel, 1092 South Orange Avenue
• Family Dollar, 1111, South Orange Avenue

The following businesses were cited with violations but were not closed:

• F&M Carpet, 1092 South Orange Avenue
• Mt Big Mo Grocery Store, 1137 South Orange Avenue

Two business were found to have violations but were not cited:

• Village Laundromat, 1124 South Orange Avenue
• Sunny Cleaner, 1149 South Orange Avenue

No business on Mount Vernon Place were closed, although the following were found to have violations, authorities said:

• Bellefluer Unisex Salon, 79 Mount Vernon Place
• Suds City Laundromat, 77 Mount Vernon Place
• Puissance Divine Clothing, 74-87 Mount Vernon Place
• Jacob’s Restaurant and Bakery, 78-80 Mount Vernon Place

No additional information was immediately provided about the nature of the alleged violations found during the June 9 enforcement operation, although previous efforts in recent weeks have resulted in summonses issued for improper licensing, expired paperwork and ceiling tile violations.

“These locations were selected in response to citizen complaints,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said Sunday. “We will continue operations like these throughout the summer and will respond to all concerns brought to our attention that denigrate the quality of life in our city.”
