Newark Water Main Breaks, South Street Collapses: Traffic Delays Expected

Delays should be expected for those who ride buses that travel along South Street, Newark city officials say.

NEWARK, NJ — A water main broke in Newark shortly after 3 a.m. on Tuesday, causing the partial collapse of South Street between Jefferson and Pacific Streets, authorities stated.

According to city news release issued around 7:10 a.m., the water main has since been closed.

South Street has been reopened for traffic traveling eastbound, although the westbound lanes between Jefferson and Pacific Street remain closed, city officials stated.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to use alternative routes to avoid delays, authorities said.

“Delays should be expected for those who ride buses that travel along South Street while repairs are being made,’ officials said. “The estimated time of completion is unknown at this time.”

Several cars were relocated so crews can start repairs to the street, and Newark Police Officers will be at some intersections to help expedite the flow of traffic in the area, officials added.
