Retired NYPD Cop Shoots Newark Men Who Tried To Rob Her: Police

The Newark men allegedly bit off more than they could chew when they tried to rob a retired cop and got shot in the process, police say.

NEWARK, NJ — A pair of robbery suspects allegedly bit off more than they could chew when they tried to rob a recently retired New York City police detective in Newark with a fake gun and got shot in the process, authorities say.

The robbery and shooting took place as the 43-year-old female NYPD detective was walking to her vehicle at Commerce Street and McCarter Highway around 9:33 p.m. on Thursday, the Newark Department of Public Safety stated.

As the officer approached her car, two men – one apparently armed with a handgun - accosted her and demanded that she hand over her money, police said.

During the alleged robbery attempt, the former detective, who retired nine months ago, fired her weapon at the men, hitting both of them, police stated.

At that point the suspects attempted to flee the scene, but responding Newark police officers arriving on the scene apprehended them before they could escape, authorities said.

Police later retrieved a replica gun allegedly used in the robbery attempt, authorities stated.

Emergency responders transported both of the Newark residents - Tahje M. Hunt, 22, and Brian P. Moore, 27 – to University Hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities charged Hunt and Moore with robbery, conspiracy and possession of a weapon (imitation firearm) for an unlawful purpose.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, police said.

Police said that anyone with information about the incident can call the Newark Police Department’s 24-hour Crime Stoppers’ tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477) or 1-877-NWK-GUNS (1-877-695-4867).
