Transformer Pole Collapses Near Newark School; Authorities Close Street

The collapsed pole downed wires and caused a "fluid spill," Newark authorities say. See when cleanup is expected to be finished.

NEWARK, NJ — A transformer pole collapsed near a Newark elementary school on Wednesday night, taking down electrical wires and forcing emergency responders to close down a section of South 10th Street, authorities said.

The triplex transformer pole collapsed around 11 p.m. on the 400-block of South 10th Street in front of Harriet Tubman Elementary School, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

The pole collapse also took down another adjoining pole and resulted in downed wires and a fluid spill, authorities said.

Emergency responders notified PSE&G and cordoned off the area to safeguard pedestrians and motorists, authorities stated.

The Newark Department of Public Safety issued the following advisory around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday:

“PSE&G is handling the clean-up and restoration of power to the area. South 10th Street from 16th Avenue to Springfield Avenue is closed during repairs. The current estimated time of clean up and restoration completion is 6 p.m. today.”
