The Prevention of Diabetes – Why and How

Internationally acclaimed diabetes expert V. Mohan, M.D., will host a lecture entitled “The Prevention of Diabetes – Why and How’’ at 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 17, in the Sister Marie de Pazzi Conference Center at Saint Peter’s University Hospital, 254 Easton Avenue. The public is encouraged to attend.

“It is estimated that nearly 800,000 New Jersey residents are affected by diabetes and one-third of those people have no idea that they have this very serious disease,” said Meena Murthy, M.D., an endocrinologist and chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Nutrition and Metabolism at Saint Peter’s University Hospital. “It is imperative that those at risk take charge of their health and make changes that will result in a healthier future.”

Among the primary risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes are being overweight, sedentary, over the age of 45 and having a family history of diabetes. African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at an increased risk, as are women who have had babies weighing more than nine pounds. People who develop type 2 diabetes can live for years without realizing they have the disease.

While people with diabetes can exhibit noticeable symptoms such as frequent urination, blurred vision and excessive thirst, most people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes do not show these overt warning signs. Often, type 2 diabetes only becomes evident when people develop one or more of its serious complications, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye damage, or nerve damage that can lead to amputations.

Please register in advance for Sunday’s seminar because seating may be limited. To register or receive more information, please leave a message at 732-339-7878. Or you can email diabetescenter@saintpetersuh.com with your name and number of attendees.
